Bedrooms
Consider its function. The bedroom is the space that we spend the most time in- sleeping, relaxing, reading, and even sometimes working are just a few of its functions. Designing a bedroom should have two basic rules: Take advantage of the good points, and keep it comfortable. Make it your personal haven and highlight features that you already have, such as great views, natural lighting, or high ceilings.
Start with the bed. Provide a blank wall suitable in size for a bed and oriented to take advantage of the best view the room provides. Don’t scrimp on nice bedding, pillows, or a mattress- these all necessary to a good nights sleep.
Control sunlight. Give ample thought to managing daylight at different times of day and year. Blinds, draperies and shutters provide flexibility and can be moved easily to change the room from light and bright to dark and cozy. If you are a light sleeper, consider fabrics with a light-blocking backing to keep out the early morning sunlight. You can also take advantage of awnings and deep eaves that shade windows.
Build out storage. Custom built-ins create efficient storage, eliminate clutter, and reduce the need to clutter room with lots of furniture. Also, look for usable space in other areas: consider storage under the bed or build out a window seat with hide-a-way storage underneath.
Hang it up in style. Customizing a closet can help organize a large collection of clothes or shoes. Upper and lower closet rods make the most use of space and allow you to see all your favorite pieces. Consider separate drawers for jewelry, socks and undergarments.
Define spaces. Use storage to separate spaces within a master suite. Consider separating a bedroom and a bath by a short hall fitted with two closets. Freestanding shelving units offer a wall of privacy as well as give you additional shelving for baskets, pictures, or other personal decorations. Try separating spaces with fabric panels on tracks. These can be moved to open the space up or section off seating, dressing, or workspace areas.
Give it some color. A little color can go a long way and pump up the atmosphere. See our tips on Color .
